Vision
The City of Newburyport’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Alliance is a group of citizens, City employees and local leaders who have joined together to do the following:
- Create a community that welcomes people of all backgrounds regardless of race, religion, political affiliation, age, ability, veteran status, socio-economic status, gender or sexual identity (DIVERSITY).
- Ensure fair treatment, equal access, opportunity and advancement for all people by identifying and eliminating barriers that have prevented or diminished the full participation of individuals or groups (EQUITY).
- Build an environment in which every person feels valued and respected by promoting racial and social justice (INCLUSION).
The Newburyport DEI Alliance recognizes that racism, classism, sexism and ageism exist in our city. While not an exhaustive list, these issues, through systems, policies and culture have disadvantaged historically excluded groups.
Mission
The mission of the DEI Alliance is to support the City’s efforts to develop an equitable and sustainable community. As such, the DEI Alliance will address these issues in an effort to create a community that is racially, socially, economically, fiscally and environmentally sound by:
- Promoting best practices of DEI in city government, businesses, social service agencies, fraternal organizations, religious institutions and the broader community.
- Celebrating examples of DEI throughout the community.
- Collaborating with others to encourage dialogue in support of DEI values.
- Supporting DEI training efforts that are intentionally antiracist and inclusive.
- Monitoring, evaluating and publishing progress of Alliance’s efforts to implement DEI best practices.
