Retired Community College Professor and Administrator
Beth is a straight, white, Christian woman who has resided in Newburyport for over 40 years. She has come to a commitment to work for diversity, equity and inclusion as a result of several experiences. First, she helped to sponsor a Cambodian refugee family many years ago, helping them to learn to thrive in U.S. culture. Second, she worked for a number of years with Latinx students and faculty Northern Essex Community College. A four and a half year assignment in St. Louis at a minority community college during the Ferguson period further awakened her to the issues faced by minorities. Since then, she has become increasingly aware of her own white privilege. She is eager to continue learning and to use what she has already learned to help make Newburyport a more welcoming city for all people. In her spare time, she is likely to be reading or running or playing with her cat.
